How to start a career as a SAP MM consultant

SAP Material Management consultants are responsible for delivering large-scale, complex solutions that combine processes with technology for purchasing and inventory. They design, implement and deploy SAP MM solutions to achieve defined business goals. They also support SAP integration, process design, evaluation, prototype and configuration, along with providing strategic planning for SAP data integration. All of this sounds pretty cool, but the real question is: where do they start from? The following steps will guide you on how to start.

Step 1: Expectation and passion

The only reason a lot of people enter this field is because they expect to earn a big salary, but they lose themselves in the sea of the SAP resources. Disappointment will hit you hard if you don't prepare yourself from the beginning that you will have to invest a lot of time, and probably money, before you could have chances to find this handsomely-paid job you were looking for in the first place. So, for the first few years, concentrate on learning each part of SAP MM module. After a few years of working as a SAP MM consultant, you can start looking for another job opportunity with a higher salary. Also, you will probably face a lot of obstacles in the process of getting into the field, gaining experience and finding a good job and the only fuel you will have all along this journey is passion. So, if you don’t have passion for this field or if you hate working in a team, working on a computer, giving presentations, making negotiations, problem solving, you should probably think again before you take another step.

Step 2: Background knowledge

You don't need to be a graduate of a certain college to understand material management. Of course it helps a little if you had studied logistics, IT or business informatics, but it's also fine to start from scratch, as long as you are ready to work hard for the first couple of months. Learn to study on your own and to be very patient. Remember that success doesn't come overnight. It is also essential to gain basic knowledge about SAP itself. You will have to have at least an overview of the other modules as well.

Step 3: Learning SAP

If you don’t mind paying a lot of money to learn, you can either take the official SAP training or course. The following is list of  important areas of training relevant for MM consultants offered by SAP:

·         S4H01 - SAP Business Suite to SAP S/4HANA Delta

·       S4LG1 - Innovative Logistics Processes in SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Management

·          S4PR1 - SAP S/4HANA Sourcing & Procurement - Functions and Innovations

·         TSCM50 - SAP ERP Procurement Academy I

·         TSCM52 - SAP ERP Procurement Academy II

However, if you found the official training and certification too expensive don't lose hope as there are many other ways to  learn SAP. For example: you can find a local training center or even study entirely on your own using online videos and materials.

Step 4: Self-Study

It is extremely important to learn to study on your own if you want to succeed in this field. Don't rely on the courses alone because what will make you truly stand out is your ability to practice, study, and expand your knowledge outside the course. Remember that "Google is your best friend" and if you dig deep, you'll find a treasure of SAP tutorials and resources. There are many sources of material available online. Choose the material that will advance your SAP MM knowledge. Here are some websites you that can help you:

·         https://open.sap.com Since 2013, openSAP has been providing free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to everyone interested in learning about SAP’s latest innovations and how to survive in the digital economy.

·         https://www.sap.com/community.html SCN (SAP Community Network) is not only a great source of materials and technical guides; it is also a source of inspiring stories that can help you move to the next level.

·         https://help.sap.com/viewer/index it offers SAP product documentation, Learning Journeys, and more.

Step 5: Build your business / domain Knowledge

Strive to understand all the details of the business you deal with. Mastering the system knowledge will come with practice and

time, but gaining the business knowledge is what you should really focus on. Carefully study the business processes as well as

how the business is translated in the SAP system itself. It is your key to succeed as a consultant.

Step 5: Background knowledge

Team working, communication, flexibility, configuration and negotiation skills are all essential for MM consultants. As an MM

consultant, you will definitely be working on computers and doing a lot of problem solving all the time. Make sure you are ok with this before you start.
