What Is the Role of a SAP Consultant?

A SAP consultant is, mainly, the person responsible for implementing the SAP system for clients, making sure that it meets the client's specifications and business requirements. The job of a SAP consultant can be both challenging and rewarding. For those who are getting started with their careers as SAP consultants, it's important to understand the exact responsibilities and duties a SAP consultant is expected to undertake. Of course the role of a SAP consultant slightly differs from one module to another, but there are general responsibilities that a SAP consultant is expected to bear, regardless of the module her/she is specialized in. In the following, we mention some these responsibilities:

SAP consultants are generally expected to:  

  1. Plan, deliver and supervise system configuration and documentation tasks.
  2. Write programs such as forms, specifications, and interfaces. They also test new interfaces to ensure that system workflows are optimized and interact well with end-users.
  3. Customize, modify, or update the already installed SAP system. They also perform data transfers from non-SAP systems to SAP.
  4. Provide detailed knowledge of the industry they are dealing with to ensure that best-practices are being applied.
  5. Test the system to make sure it's error-free and totally integrated before deployment.
  6. Train and mentor junior SAP consultants.
  7. Provide technical support for clients after implementing the system.
  8. Constantly improve their business knowledge and technical skills, keeping their SAP knowledge updated.
  9. Work in team environments and have soft skills such as presentation, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
